THE STRUCTURE OF THE DAZZLING ROOF REFLECTED IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN WITH NATURAL MATERIALS

The use of bamboo, areca nut and palm leaves to form roofs can often be found in India. In the Kerala area I was lucky enough to visit this architectural studio where the roof has a strong presence. In the interior, traditional techniques and technology coexist.

CUTTING BAMBOO STRIPS

Cutting bamboo cane into strips or strips is a very traditional technique that has always been used to make weavings, bahareque tecnic, more flexible cuts, etc. In general, this type of cutting can be found in all cultures that have access to bamboo as a native material.

The cut can be done manually with blades or with the star cutter that allows to cut a cane in several strips at the same time. Currently, cutting is being done mechanically, with laser cutting machines as well.

Bamboo canes with leptomorphic rhizomes facilitate cutting into strips by having their vascular bundles in sheaths. In addition, the thinner walls of the canes make the work simpler as well. Bamboos of the genus Phyllostachys, very common in Asia, are commonly worked into strips for both basketry and woven constructions, as they have very good characteristics for these uses.

MuMu HOUSEWARE SUELOS DE BAMBÚ PARA EXTERIORES

MuMu HOUSEWARE OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE BAMBOO DECKING
Moso Bamboo  (Phyllostachys pubescens) floors for outdoor use are currently being made in China.
By means of an industrial process from the bamboo fibres.

KOH PEN BAMBOO BRIDGE, CAMBODIA
This bridge made with bamboo reeds was built annually in the seasons that the climate allowed it, in the seasons without rains. It crosses the Mekong River at Kampong Cham. The particularity of this construction is that each year was destroyed by heavy rains and rising tide and had to be redone when the rains stopped.
It was one of the longest bamboo bridges not built in 2017 and was replaced by a concrete bridge.

BAMBOO GABIONS IN ASIA
Bamboo gabions stuffed with stones are part of the traditional hydraulic engineering of Asia, mainly China.
These weavings were part of restraint systems of the rivers of China, along with other methods such as the use of reeds of grass tied up with strings of bamboo were placed in the dikes of approximately 10 meters of height.
In addition the giant gabions were used as sustenance of gateways or bridges that allowed a rapid and efficient construction for building ease and because of its lightness.

NATURAL FIBERS IN THE HOUSES OF THE SIERRA OF ECUADOR
Travel through the towns of the sierra of Ecuador you can find several traditional buildings, many who continue using and other empty but that are still standing. The appearance of the block of concrete as a construction system displaced the use of vegetable fibers and the popular construction methodology, although it is less efficient concrete block in terms of adaptation to the climate of the sierra was adopted by its systematization. In a visit to the interior of a house without use, it can identify the different fibers used in its construction. Natural fibres as the cane, ropes of straw, coconut, palm and sisal leaf weaves, eucalyptus wood (used directly in the roof structures or furniture), etc. are present in the construction of the home.
