Los gaviones de bambú forman parte de la ingeniería hidráulica tradicional de Asia, principalmente de China.
Estos tejidos rellenos de piedras conformaban sistemas de retención de aguas de los ríos de China, junto con otros métodos como el uso de fajinas de cañas de gramíneas atadas con cuerdas de bambú se colocaban en los diques de aproximadamente 10 metros de altura.
Además los gaviones gigantes se utilizaban como sustento de pasarelas o puentes que por facilidad constructiva y por su ligereza permitían una construcción rápida y eficiente.
BAMBOO GABIONS IN ASIA

Estos tejidos hexagonales realizados a partir de los cortes en tiras de las cañas de bambú presentan gran resistencia ya que su configuración porosa permite las filtraciones de agua y aguanta las presiones. A la vez, su patrón geométrico forma una estructura rígida y estable, triangulada, que aumenta con la fricción de la superposición de las tiras que lo conforman. Se realizan con la cara externa de la caña, al ser la que presenta mayor
resistencia a la fricción del agua y al desgaste en contacto con piedras
y demás, es la parte del bambú preparado para resistir el rozamiento y los condicionantes externos.
Las dimensiones tradicionales que se manejaban eran de aproximadamente 12 metros de largo y 5 metros de diámetro.
